Recommended Tools for Extracting/Editing Built-in Subtitles in MKV
MKVToolNix, also known as Matroska toolkit, is a powerful set of tools for creating and processing mkv (Matroska) format. It supports packaging various video, audio, and subtitle formats into mkv format.
By configuring the corresponding plugins, it is also possible to extract content from mkv.
Additionally, this tool can be used to split videos based on duration or file size.
Download:
mkvtoolnix: http://www.fosshub.com/MKVToolNix.html
MKVExtractGUI-2: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mkvextractgui-2/
For the first one, you can choose to download the portable version, which can be extracted and used directly.
For the second one, you need to extract it to the directory of the first one in order to use it. It is similar to a plugin. (The video file name cannot contain Chinese characters, but the path name is not a problem.)
The program entry for subtitle extraction is: MKVExtractGUI2.exe
, and the main program entry is mmg.exe
. I haven't found a suitable Chinese version yet. The latest version of mkvtoolnix has a built-in Chinese language pack.
After selecting the file in MKVExtractGUI2.exe
, it will automatically scan for extractable items, which are usually Video
, Audio
, and SubTitles
. For subtitles, it is SubTitles
. After selecting only this item, click Extract
. Of course, you can also set the output directory.
The main program can perform operations such as subtitle/track packaging, video splitting/merging, etc.

For subtitle editing, you will need a tool called SrtEdit
.
